Volunteer Program

"Volunteering at the Elizabeth Fry Society has been very rewarding for me. The staff have been real supportive and do a lot to help the women who have been incarcerated, or in conflict with the law. The Elizabeth Fry women get to know the person, not the criminal. I should know because I'm an ex inmate." - Brenda

The Elizabeth Fry Society provides a variety of opportunities for members of the community to make a difference in the lives of women in conflict with the law, while gaining valuable knowledge and experience within the criminal justice system. After participating in training about:

  • the criminal justice system,
  • court procedures,
  • substance abuse,
  • status of women issues,
  • Aboriginal issues, and
  • community resources,
volunteers work in the courts, in the community,or in our office, providing a variety of services, including:
  • direct service to women and girls inside and outside the courtroom,
  • assistance in the daily operation of the Society,
  • practical assistance and support to clients by participating in one-to-one matches or in the mentor program, and
  • where possible, transportation for children to visit their incarcerated mothers.
